Joker Movie Review

The most relieving thing about Joker film is that it runs for an hour and forty five minutes only. Mercifully, one has to bear this film for not a minute longer and for this one feat alone, the director deserves an pat on his back. Rest of the film however, is as insipid and tasteless as the directors Twitter diarrhea.

Akshay plays Agastya a scientist trying to communicate with aliens. A death in the family brings him and his wife Sonakshi to this village Pagalpur, inhabited by seriously mad villagers and off the map of India. Agastya decides the only way to put the village onto the nation's conscience is to fabricate a lie about alien sightings.

All works well until real aliens land up and the already mad village goes even more mad. On paper and in concept the story line of Joker sounds pregnant with possibilities. A madcap alien adventure and a metaphor for the thousands of forgotten villages in India which have to take the route of a sensational news item to get noticed- A commercial version of Peepli Live if you may.

In reality, with Kunder at the helm, Joker ends up being an insufferable farce. Neither does the film work as a brainless entertainer, nor does it have enough meat to sustain an out of the ordinary sci-fi tale. The people of Pagalpur are mad to the point of being demented. The aliens tacky, ugly and straight out of an 80's Ramsay horror film. The film is inundated by inane gags that dont even make you smile leave alone leve you in splits. The writing is uninspired, amateurish and seriously kindergarten'ish in nature.

Akshay Kumar plays to the gallery and is his usual loud self. Sonakshi content with being an eye candy in songs does more of the same thing she has done in her last two outings.

Shreyas Talpade makes you feel sorry for him seeing such talent being criminally misused, Minisha Lamba is as confused about her role as is the director who got her into the film in the first place. Rest of the cast hams through scenes in costumes that look like left overs from Lagaan's sets.

There is mandatory item number thrown in, aliens do thumkas and jhatkas, mad running around happens and the film mercifully comes to an end before you could take that last step off the cliff.

Janeman, Tees Maar Khan and now Joker, perhaps this would make Kunder realize films are not his cup of tea. Twitter controversies suit his style better. Stay Away at any cost.

Pritam has been hit with several allegations of plagiarism in recent times. With "Barfi!", the music director hits back at critics with a vengeance through the soundtrack that has eight numbers. It's vintage Pritam at his best.

The album kicks off with the title track "Barfi!" with the sound of whistles greeting the listener. The song has a very English charm and has Mohit Chauhan behind the mike. He provides a light and soulful start to the number, bringing a smile on. Its peppy yet simple beats are a total delight, while the lyrics bring out the naughtiness of Ranbir's character in the movie.

There is another version of the song "Ala Barfi!". Crooned by Swanand Kirkire, this is a bit different from the original and has more focus on the vocals. It is reminiscent of Kishore Kumar's quirky melodies of yesteryears.

Next up is "Main kya karoon", a romantic track penned by Ashish Pandit and crooned by the melodious Nikhil Paul George. The song recalls the fervour of young romance and the tune is very new age with a very soft feel. However, it is the singer who steals the show here and makes you fall in love with the song.

Assam's poster boy in Bollywood, Papon, takes you back in time with the old school "Kyon", penned by Neelesh Mishra. The sound again is very mellow. It is unusual in its feel and is Papon's show all the way. His raw voice is impeccable, but he also gets good support from Sunidhi Chauhan in the vocals, making the track a fine composition.

It is followed by "Aashiyan', which has a very Spanish feel to it with very good use of flute and other instruments. It's a very sweet song with a mesmerising composition by Pritam. The voices of Shreya Ghoshal and Nikhil Paul George blend oh-so-well to create the perfect mood.

Next on the playlist is "Sawaali Raat". It has a whispery tone and is something you surely haven't heard in a really long time. With its romantic undertones, the song is unique and it's hard to say whether it's a lullaby or something else. Arijit Singh of "Raabta" fame simply bowls you over with his harmonious voice making you put this track on loop.

Rounding up the album is "Phir le aya dil". Singer Rekha Bhardwaj lends her distinct voice to the number, which makes its way to your heart. The composition is good with the interplay of piano and guitar, laced with Indian sounds. Pritam deserves all the kudos for composing such a wonderful song.

It also has a reprise version by Arijit Singh. It is as pleasant as the original but has a more ghazal feel to it. There are different moods here - at times an Indian feel with the tabla and in some intervals, a jazz feel with the piano. However, it is the singer who sets the mood right by creating a captivating experience for the listener with his profound voice.

Overall, the soundtrack is a joyride sans flaws. Pritam has given many hits, but like his tunes in "Life... in a Metro", this one will be remembered for breaking the monotony in his sound. There are no foot-tapping numbers or remixes here, but the simplicity that makes this album a winner.

Verdict: Barfi!'s Music simplicity makes this album a winner.

Shirish Kunder's Twitter Apology to Shah Rukh Khan

Shirish Kunder apologises to Shah Rukh Khan on Twitter. He tweeted "I'll always regret one thing that I feel very guilty about. I sincerely apologize for my tweet about Ra.One".



The editor-turned-director, who is married to Shah Rukh Khan's close friend and choreographer-director-and-now-actor Farah Khan, had created a stir last year when he took a potshot at the superstar's mega-budget venture "RA.One" on Twitter.

"I just heard a 150 Cr firework fizzle," Shirish Kunder had tweeted.

However, Mr Kunder has now apologised for the same in a tweet today, and says he regrets it.

Even though Farah was not aware of the tweet, she said she was proud of her husband because she felt that it took a lot of courage to apologize.

"I haven't read the tweet right now. But I am proud of my husband. It takes a big heart to apologise," she said.

The director says they are still in search of the leading lady. "There will be only one leading lady in my film but nothing has been finalised yet," he added. Katrina Kaif is tipped to star in this film.

"It's too early to talk about this film. But yes Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor will be doing this film, and all I can say is that it's not a love triangle," Zafar said.

About the movie's progress, he said: "I have locked the script and I met both of them. Adi (Aditya Chopra of Yash Raj Films) said both these boys will completely justify the role, so we offered it to them. The film is yet untitled."

The film will go on floors in Mumbai mid-December.

The promos of Shirin Farhad promised us a cute, romantic movie and I am happy to say that it does live up to its promise for the major part. The love story between two middle aged Parsis could have been a story about older people from any community seeking love but setting it in the Parsi community gives the movie a uniquely sweet flavour.

Farhad is a typical bawa bachelor boy living with his grandmother and his, as he calls it, over loving mother. He wants to get married but has not found the right one. Of course, the fact that he works as a salesman at a bra and panty shop mars his eligibility. Shirin waltzes into the shop and into his heart. His mother opposes the and the story then winds its way to its conclusion after some melodrama and action.

Boman is a consummate actor and playing a middle aged Parsi would come naturally to him given that he grew up surrounded by many such middle aged Parsi bachelors. He is sweet and innocent in his love for Shirin and tender towards his dominating mom. I loved Farha. She looks young and fresh and softer than I have ever seen her. She also gets the Parsi mannerisms right. Daisy Irani as the mom and Shammiji as the grand mom are perfect in their roles too.

I am a half bawa myself and was watching the movie with my mom and we can vouch for the authenticity of most of the movie. There are a few over the top sequences and a slight overdose of loony characters which makes those sequences a bit amateurish and tacky. However, thankfully these are not too many. There is also a slow sad number which slows down the pace.

Overall, this is a charming movie to watch. Like Farhad says, love has no expiry date and I am sure everyone will come out of this one feeling just that little bit more romantic about life.

Verdict: Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi is a charming movie to watch

Salman Khan does not want to do an Action Film

Bollywood Actor Salman Khan is not keen on doing an Action film soon. In a recent interview Salman said "I am the 'Tiger', I can't make excuses like 'I am unwell, I can't do it'," Salman, who recently underwent treatment for trigeminal neuralgia in the US.


"I have done all the things like running, beating, falling, jumping from one place to another.... if you are physically fit, you can perhaps do all this. But it takes a lot of toll on your body as you are doing the same thing the whole day," he explained.

Salman's hard work seems to be paying rich dividends as his espionage romp "Ek Tha Tiger" raked in Rs.31.5 crore on its opening day.

Now Salman wants to go back to the romantic genre.

"I am doing a romantic film soon. Action is very tough... One has to get up at odd hours, like early morning, to do action films, work till late night, do action in worst conditions like in hot weather, fighting on rooftops and dirty places. It is difficult," he said.

The 47-year-old is destiny's child. Controversy, it appears, could be his middle name; he is neck deep in legal battles and health issues and has yet emerged box-office king with back-to-back action blockbusters - "Wanted", "Dabangg", "Ready" and "Bodyguard".

All of them entered the Rs.100 crore club and "Ek Tha Tiger" is on a record-breaking spree too. After setting a new record by raking in Rs.31.5 crore on opening day, it has also smashed the weekend collection record by earning Rs.45 crore.

In Salman's view, with the increasing number of theatres and the rise in ticket prices, Rs.100 crore could soon be equivalent to Rs.10 crore.

"The exact collection starts from single screens and multiplexes in cities and small towns. With ticket prices and number of theatres also increasing, the films are likely to do a huge amount of business. Soon, this Rs.100 crore will be like Rs.10 crore," Salman said.

"And talking about the overseas business, who knows what business the film is exactly doing in overseas? Once the distributor starts giving actual figures, the numbers will definitely go up."

Salman forayed into Bollywood with 1988 film "Biwi Ho Toh Aisi" in a small role as Rekha's spoilt brother-in-law. Success was his the very next year with the 1989 romance "Maine Pyaar Kiya".

There was no looking back after that. He climbed the success ladder rapidly and churned out romantic hits like "Love", "Saajan", "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun" and "Hum Dil Chuke Sanam".

He then did romantic comedies like "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi", "Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya" and "Partner". In 2009, he endorsed action with "Wanted", the first in the series to hit the screen.

Have you heard of Murphy Radio? Seen that cute kid they used for advertising? If not, here is a picture of the kid.

So, this Radio used to be quite famous for decades in India, and the baby, just like Parle n Amul ones, was a symbol that could be identified by almost anyone.

Here, in the story of the Barfi!, Ranbeer Kapoor's mother wanted a kid like the murphy kid, and hence decided to name him Murphy. And even though she died early, probably in childbirth, the kid was named Murphy.

However, since Ranbeer is mute n deaf, he cannot say Murphy, but in the way mute people speak, is able to say what sounds like 'Barfi!', and hence the name of the movie.
