OMG Oh My God Movie Review

God is a touchy topic. Playing around the theme of flagrant atheism, which in my opinion could be as dangerous as any right-wing extremist group, can potently trigger a violent insurgency. So how does one make a film that entirely discards the concept of God with genuine reasons to back that claim up? By not promoting an ideological agenda but in fact, mocking the commercialization of faith and our unrelenting devotion to a seemingly irrational mechanism.

OMG had scope to be a poignant social satire that could poke its handle on our flawed concept of idol worship and blind faith in Gods and bogus over-dressed cheats posing as God-men, but the film’s over-the-top ambition plays a deterrent making it not only tediously preachy but a poor adaptation of the Gujarati play on which it is based. Paresh Rawal plays Kanji bhai, an atheist who runs a shop that sells miniature figures of Gods and capitalizes on the unshakable faith of gold-flaunting businessmen, by manipulating them into buying rarest-of-rare idols passed by some 120-year old Maharshis. His family is jittery about his attitude, the wife even tries to unsuccessfully instill a sense of devotion until one day earthquake strikes the city and Kanji’s shop is the only one in the flea market to come tumbling down amongst hoards of others. His next logical step is to go to the insurance firm, who deny the claim citing the “Act of God” clause in the T&C. So Kanji does the next logical – sues God. He wants God to pay up because His alleged “Act” cost him his shop.

The premise is robustly interestingly for a hilarious, rollickingly funny satire. But rather than sticking to the crux of the idea – Kanji recovering money from God using all the tricks from His own books, the film steers away in becoming a liberal Astha channel of sorts where messages of Gods being all encompassing and having no form, of them residing in the hearts rather than in an idol made from stone et al, are haphazardly placed and passed. Akshay Kumar plays God, he is a random avatar who has landed to aid Paresh Rawal in his court case. But he doesn’t represent Him in court, rather clergies, pundits’, God-men, pastors’ fight against Kanji’s irreverent case. Mithun Chakrovarty plays a Swamy Nityananda inspired character and his actions are so ridiculously funny, you’d be laughing your guts out. He looks entirely stoned and there are strong hints on his homosexuality. And Mithun da being Mithun da, keeps one of his hands in a shank-like position over his mouth throughout the film. Crazy, this. Poonam Jhawar playing Gopi Maiyya is as absurdly funny as it sounds. But these are instances where the film evokes laughs because it is deliberately tweaked to be so. Throughout its very long running time, you’d be annoyed with the ear-pounding background tone and obnoxiously loud songs that are way too frequent. The theatrical dialogues constantly take away from the cinematic experience making OMG look like an awkward cross between a play and a movie – and the worst part, it is exceptional in neither. Paresh Rawal is at the center of the film the veteran actor is comical and profound, in equal measure. But monotony soon sets in and things like, God wants us to help the poor, just become propaganda to watch, with zero entertainment value. Akshay Kumar is painful in that Godly attire. His dialogues carry no conviction and are so contrived as if he is reading it from a teleprompter.

I’d have happily recommended OMG! had it remained honest to its essential subject. Man sues God and recovers money from manipulative insurance firms. Sadly, the scale of ambition here is so towering, and direction so inept, even God, if there is one, will feel shortchanged.

Verdict: What could have been a great social satire goes off-topic becoming a tediously preachy film.

Aiyyaa Music Review

Till about a month back not much was known about Aiyyaa. However the very first promo of the film did the trick and one realized that this was one whacky film in the offering with some unconventional storyline to boast of. Along with the promo one could also hear glimpses of the film's soundtrack which further established loud and clear that composer Amit Trivedi and lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya would possibly go all out when it whacky quotient.

It's a smashing kick-start to Aiyyaa with 'Dreamum Wakeupum' turning out to be a spoof of the highest degree. Naughty, seductive and of course below the belt, 'Dreamum Wakeupum' is just the kind of song that made waves in the 80s, especially in the industry down South. One can clearly see Soumya Rao having some real good fun crooning this one, what with Amitabh Bhattacharya bringing in everything from 'Lust' to 'Kamasutra' to 'Size Does Matter', 'Body Heat' to 'Thunder Thighs and everything else that comes with a package. While Rani Mukherjee is clearly excited about the song, expect a rioting outing on screen.

Next to arrive is a 'Lavni' which is titled 'Sava Dollar'. This one follows the template to the T and has Sunidhi Chauhan rendering for this young woman who is inspired in a big way by Bollywood, its happening and of course the celebrities. A situational number about big dreams and the perks associated with the world of glamour, this one turns out to be an average outing. In fact is an anti climax of sorts after 'Dreamum Wakeupum' which had given a terrific start to the album. Having said that, one has to give it to Rani for making her exaggerated expressions do the trick all over again, hence making one stay on with the song.

Shalmali Kholgade and Monali Thakur, two upcoming singers who have been giving a good account of themselves so far, pair up for 'Aga Bai'. A fusion track which has an Amit Trivedi stamp to it, what with 'desi' tune camouflaged with Western arrangements, this one has a similar kind of touch up as 'Dreamum Wakeupum' when it comes to the naughty quotient. Though not as effective, this one still has enough meat in it to create some fire on screen, provided its picturisation turns out to be as energetic, fast and furious as the film promises.

There is a shift in mood though with certain 'thehrav' coming in the album. The way 'Mahek Bhi' begins, it pretty much sounds like a lullaby in the offering, what with a soft range of instruments reminding one of 'Good Night' [Ferrari Ki Sawaari]. Nevertheless, the song has an altogether different setting to it as an extended prelude (lasting close to 100 seconds) is followed by Shreya Ghoshal's soulful vocals coming into play. A serene song, it is easy on ears but strictly restricted to the film's situation.

Fun is back in the album with Sneha Khanvilkar taking the lead with Amitabh Bhattacharya deciding to come behind the mike as well with 'What To Do'. While Sneha has been known to follow a different approach when it comes to her compositions (case in point being her recent score in Gangs Of Wasseypur I and II), the same holds true in the way she goes about as a singer as well. Moreover lyrics take an unimaginable route all over again, what with double meaning words galore, sample being - 'Jahan Se Connection Mile, Point Main Plug Ka Dhoondhu; Aise Murge Ka Faayada Kya, Jo Naa Bole Kukdukoo'.

The album concludes with 'Wakda' which has an Indian classical beginning to it. Since the term has been publicized so much all this while in the film's promotion, one would have expected a really special song. However it turns out to be a decent, though not extraordinary composition, even as Amit Trivedi himself comes behind the mike for this one. Yes, it is pleasant sounding and also has a good rhythm to it. Still, one can't really slot this one as a chartbuster in the offering.

As stated earlier, expectations had soared after 'Dreamum Wakeupum' was heard first. However rest of the album turns out to be average to good but not quite an overall package that could make one vouch for this one as a musical entertainer in the offering.

English Vinglish Music Review

Evergreen beauty Sridevi is returning to the silver screen after a hiatus of 15 years with "English Vinglish". Its soundtrack covers six tracks, created by new-age master composer Amit Trivedi, with lyrics penned by Swanand Kirkire.

The album kicks off with the title track "English Vinglish", a peppy and energetic track to start off the day and fight challenges in life. Sunita Rao's vocals blend quite well with Trivedi's, and the number definitely elevates the spirit. The lyrics, in true Hinglish style, don't seem vague and have been penned with an aesthetic approach by Kirkire. There's good use of instruments like violin fused with contemporary sounds.

The track also has a male version where Trivedi takes centrestage. Musically it isn't too different, but the magic of the singer's voice strikes the right chords and charms the listener all the way.

It is followed by "Dhak Dhuk", a folksy and soft number which deals with the anxieties of a young bride leaving for another country. Trivedi is brilliant behind the mike in this one, with his soulful rendition. This gloomy composition grows on the listener. The use of flute in the song to good effect is especially plausible, and Kirkire has penned lyrics, which tug right at the heartstrings.

Next up on the playlist is "Manhattan". Dialogues by Sridevi, envisioning the hustle bustle of a US city, welcome the listener in this track. It starts on a high note full of energy but fails to create an impact. Clinton Cerejo is average in the vocal department, but the surprise package is Bianca Gomes who impresses with her voice. Some good techno sounds here and there with the flute are nice on the ear, but the track still falls short of expectations.

"Gustakh Dil" brings back the duo of Trivedi and Rao together and their voices really do wonders. Such perfect sync is a rarity and this might well be one of the best duets this year in Bollywood. The track uses minimal sounds and focusses on the singers' talent, bringing the best out of them. It has bit of a rock touch to it. Kudos also to Kirkire for doing justice to the song with his beautiful words.

Rounding up the album is "Navraj Majhi", crooned by an ensemble of singers including Sunidhi Chauhan, Swanand Kirkire, Natalie Di Luccio and Neelambari Kirkire. The song captures the essence of a traditional Marathi wedding. Sunidhi is good on the vocals while Natalie D'Luccio and Trivedi enjoin a modern flavour to this folk track. The lyricist and his mother, Neelambari Kirkire, also join the celebration. It's fun all the way.

Although the "English Vinglish" album lacks the lustre of new age Bollywood albums, it manages to leave the listener smiling with its simple approach. There are no remixes and nothing out-of-the-box here, but it delights.

Barfi is India's Official entry to the Oscars 2013

Bollywood Film Barfi is India's Official entry to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The decision was taken at a Film Federation of India (FFI). Barfi will be representing India at the 85th Academy Awards going to be held in February 2013.

Heroine starts nowhere and ends nowhere. And in between coming and going from and to nowhere, it wallows in a pond full of tears of self-pity.

We wonder why Mahi Arora is so unhappy. We never know exactly where her career stands at the start of the movie. Is she on top of the heap or a well- established actress or is her career on the wane? Since we don’t have this crucial bit of information it’s hard to process her relationship with her actor boyfriend. Is she so emotional about him because she has nothing else? And when he leaves her she moves on to the next puddle of tears and the next boyfriend. She also works on her career. He seems to be a nice guy who loves her and she bags a big movie and yet our heroine cries and cries and then rejects him. She engineers a scandal to ensure a hit and then cries about doing it. Her strategy works, the movie becomes a hit and still she cries and shivers and becomes a wreck.

All this crying takes place over 3 hours and towards the end I was hoping fervently that she would overdose on pills or slash her wrist or at the very least fall off the ledge in a drunken stupor. But no such luck. We have to wait till the end to see an abrupt ending at which the guy next to me exclaimed “Yeh kya tha???”

Kareena plays the neurotic woman who does not know what she wants to the hilt. No eye make up, smudged mascara, red nose and copious tears make up the Heroine. She has wasted her energy and her talent. Even ‘Halkat Jawani’ is a damp squib. Arjun Rampal and Randeep Hooda as the love interests are decent. The person I really liked watching was Shahana Goswami as the Bengali art film actress. Ranveer Shorey as the mad Bengali director at least provides some much needed laughs.

Too weepy, too rambling, too long. Heroine is an exercise in self indulgence and narcissism. Avoid.

Verdict: Long and mending, Heroine is boring

Brad Pitt Talks about Bollywood

Hollywood's biggest star Brad Pitt shares his views on Bollywood.

"Indian cinema seems to be growing very well at its own pace. I would love to work in a Bollywood film as there is so much drama and colour in the films there," Pitt told in an interview.

"The filmmaking, I hear, has evolved a lot in India and of late we have witnessed some good films making a presence at the Oscars and the world stage," added the actor.

"That tells you a lot about the quality of the actors and the films. You never know when I might decide to work in a Bollywood film and do one of those dance numbers with the whole crew in the backdrop," quipped Pitt, who shot in the country for 2007 movie "A Mighty Heart".

The 48-year-old actor, who has been named among the sexiest men in the world multiple times, is especially fond of former Miss World Aishwarya. He says he is open to work with her.

"Given a chance, I would like to work with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan because she's a versatile actor. She has worked brilliantly in films like 'The Mistress of Spices', 'The Last Legion', 'The Pink Panther 2' and 'Provoked' to name a few," said Pitt.

"She is one of the most popular actresses of Bollywood, who has achieved huge acclaim in the west for her style, beauty and acting skills. I think we missed an opportunity to be cast together for the movie 'Troy'," he added.

Meanwhile, Pitt has finally decided to enter wedlock with his lady love Angelina Jolie, with whom he makes up the popular 'Brangelina' brand. The couple have six children. Though his wedding date is yet to be fixed, the actor has wished India's 'Saifeena' - Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor - all the best for their D-day next month.

"To be honest, I really think Saif and Kareena can be called Bollywood's sexiest couple so far. I am glad to know they are getting married soon. I wish them all the success for a happy married life," he said.
